WLB Feb. 7 Council Agenda Includes Recreational Marijuana

WEST LONG BRANCH: The Caucus Council Meeting Agenda for Wednesday, Feb. 7 has discussion of perhaps introducing an ordinance for allowing the use of Recreational Marijuana in the borough. The meeting is at 6:30 P.M. at Borough Hall before the regular meeting which follows after the Caucus,

It is the first time the subject has been on the table in the borough. The governing body may choose to refer the subject to the Ordinance Review Committee for study and recommendation.

Other towns in the State have had the subject before them. A nearby city, Asbury Park has the subject before its Council as reported in the Asbury Park Press at the end of January. Newly elected NJ Gov. Phil Murphy has been pushing the legalization and sale of the drug to generate taxes, and to lighten penalties on people found using or in possession.

Concerns so far include effect on drivers, lack of determining if Driving Under the Influence" cases will climb There is difficulty in detecting and testing for "DUI" when erratic actions cause police to pull drivers over.

Usage has some people saying these observations do not lead to the greater usage or "gateways", an introduction to other drugs and behavior issues. Among these concerns are traffic safety, and collecting and analyzing results that indicate unsafe riving performance.

Marketplace controls are still an area under review, controlling sale to underage, and costs of treating abuse.
