Police: No Charges Filed Against Bus Driver Who Hit Bicyclist In Long Branch

LONG BRANCH: Police say no charges have been filed "at this time" against the driver of a Long Branch Board of Education bus who hit a bicyclist on Monday afternoon, Oct. 2.

Acting Long Branch Police Chief Jason Roebuck said the bus was empty of children at the time and that the driver, whose name was not released, was taken for a blood test.

The accident occurred around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Sairs Avenue and Westwood Avenue. Marva Fitzpatrick, 45, of Long Branch was riding here bike north when she was hit by the bus which was travelling westbound on West End Avenue through the intersection. Roebuck said Fitzpatrick was on the west side of the street, against the flow of traffic when she was struck.

She was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center's trauma center because of the nature of her injuries, which included a head injury, and underwent surgery there. Roebuck said he has no further information on her condition as of 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Fitzpatrick is the daughter of Long Branch Board Of Education member Caroline Bennett.

The accident investigation is ongoing by the Long Branch Police Traffic Unit, Roebuck said.
