Ocean Twsp Cleans Up for Earth Day

Ocean Township: A cadre of 86 volunteers showed up for Clean Sweep at the Oakhurst Firemen's Field building to spruce up the town on Sunday, April 22nd. A terrific storm on the 15th moved the project one week to the "Rain Date".

The change made a difference. The typical number of volunteers is 150+. Usually 100 youngsters from the schools and Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts join in. Parents and guardians make up the balance. Roughly half the number of youngsters.

Scout troops were here again this year as was the Police Explorers team. Schools helping out were the Ocean Twsp High, Intermediate and Elementary schools, including Wanamassa and Wayside. Several "freelancers", about three dozen adults, made up the total.

Police were on duty to provide safety for work going on near traffic spots and at the parks.

Ocean's Director of Code, Housing and Clean Communities, Tom Caruso and his volunteers at the Firemen's Field distributed gloves, bags for collecting trash and recyclables. Tools to snatch up stuff found in difficult to retrieve places were also handed out and got a lot of use, especially at town Hall where cigarette butts filled the edges of sidewalks near entrances.

All in all it was a productive day with the volunteers feeling good about their work results for their town
