LONG BRANCH: For the second year Trinity AME Church and the Greater Long Branch NAACP have distributed back packs to excited youngsters as the school year approaches.
Volunteers from both groups set up tables on the side of the church on Sunday to hand out the bags, while parents, donors, church members, several police department members and community leaders watched with smiling faces.
In all 130 bags were distributed, with each child given the opportunity to choose the color and style they wanted.
Several wagon loads were carted from the Bucky James Center to the church. Weather was warm and comfortable for the event. It was a strong message, a clear demonstration of the community emphasizing the importance of education.
Thanks went also out to the Ezekiel's Wheels group for the donations they had provided.
As NAACP President Bill Dangler and Trinity AME Pastor Lesly Devereaux chatted with the happy boys and girls, the children's excitement was a reward in itself, they said.
The next major event for the NAACP local chapter will be the Freedom Foundation Banquet on November 4 at Branches. For more info call Bill Dangler at 877-530-0067 (also the FAX number).
