West Park Players Present: Miss Saigon

Ocean Twsp:  Director Bob Angelini lead his troupe of high school actors in the stage production of Miss Saigon. Miss Saigon a play based on the opera Madam Butterfly by Giamcomo Puccini kicked off last week by the West Park Players.  Angelini says of Miss Saigon, "…a tale of love, gained and lost, and an anthem of the fragility of life, love and the human spirit."

Preparation and rehearsals began last December and it definitely shows with this production of Miss Saigon which was brilliantly executed. The set and costume design transported the audience to a turbulent and grief stricken Vietnam. Moreover, the acting of the cast gave even more credibility to the newly occupied world of the audience.  The lead actors stunningly and vividly captured the audience on a journey back in time and place. The actors giving performances encompassing the hardships of Vietnam and the personal tragedies of the characters in the show.

The main characters in the play included the Engineer, Chris, Kim, and Thuy. The Engineer, played by Lucas Manfredi, is a stunning character that invoked such vileness as a pimp, but also as a good comedic foil to the thickly tense plot. Chris, played by Richard Huy, was the male protagonist, who falls in love with Kim. Huy delivered stunning musical soliloquies enriching the character's depth and sentiments.  A performance to remember.

Kim, played by Julia Whary, is an innocent Vietnamese girl taken from her village, whom later falls in love with Chris . It was her third appearance as a West Park Player. Much like her co-star Richard Huy, she delivered beautiful musical numbers that evoked the audiences’ deepest emotions. Matt Brautigan assumed the role Thuy, the evil Viet Cong Commandant who desired to reclaim Kim, who was originally promised to him. It was Matt’s eighth performance as a West Park Player, who started with the troupe when he was 10 years young.

The play was excellently executed and tragically moving. The cast and crew in collaboration delivered an engrossing and heart pounding performance of Miss Saigon.   WORDontheShore says "Bravo!  West Park Players...Miss Saigon, a show to cherish and remember.
