OCEANPORT: Borough resident Steven Valinoti was honored by the Oceanport Council during its Sept. 7 meeting for his recent heroic actions.

Valinoti received a proclamation from the council in front of a crowd of his friends for saving the life of a woman who was in distress in the waters off Blackberry Bay Park.

"Without regard for his own safety, without rescue equipment and in his civilian clothes jumped into the water and swam out to the female," the proclamation read by Mayor Jay Coffey states. "The female was approximately 25 to 40 yards away from the shore and Mr. Valinoti took hold of her and pulled her safely to the shore."

The woman came away without suffering any major injuries in the incident which occurred on Aug. 7.

Valinoti received a large round of applause from the audience but opted not to speak during the meeting.
