LONG BRANCH: The banner across the stage at Pier Village read "GoldensealtheBand.com" and the sounds said USA, music of America. The band was at Festival Plaza with 500 fans loving it all.
Bandleader Joe Hughes and the gang put on a super show. Joe reached into the audience for help, for the fans to get into it with him and his sax man, guitar man, singing / swinging lady vocalists and the drummer who gave out the beat that had rockers on their feet.
The repertoire was Springsteen's "Glory Days", and Hughes' own "My Home Town", a tribute to the shore and to his adopted West Long Branch - "Just six minutes away for here" he shouted.
There was also "Buttercup", "Mustang Sally", "Build Me Up", "My Gal", "Sweet Caroline" and much more, a 90-minute trip down Memory Lane.
As is often the scene at the plaza on Thursday nights in the summer, the evening was also a family affair with kids of all ages. For the Goldenseal band they danced and hopped around at the foot of the stage, a move that had Hughes delighted and the audience smiling encouragements.
This week, Brian Kirk and the Jirks will play Thursday a Pier Village at 7 p.m. Get there early for a bite to eat and another musical treat at the Long Branch summer scene.
