Celtic Tribute 5K In Memory of Fallen Officers.

Long Branch:  Long Branch PBA Local 10’s Annual 5K, the Celtic Tribute in memory of fallen police officers Patrolman Herman Emmons, Patrolman William Richards and Sergeant Patrick King, was run on Saturday at the boardwalk to benefit the Local’s scholarship fund. 297 runners participated.

Officer Scott Beaver paid tribute to the fallen comrades “to honor their dedication to protecting others” as retired Officer Pat Joyce sang the Star Spangled Banner. SRC President Phil Hinck gave final instructions.

The weather was sunny and clear with a strong wind from the north that runners would face on the back half of the race.  Despite the elements, winner Dave Slavinski of Point Pleasant finished with a time of 16:05.62, a minute and a half faster than the 2011 event, which was run in a hard driving rain. Second place went to Tyler Gillies of Howell, and third went to Matthew Weissinger, Somerville.

For the women, Allison Linnell, Colts Neck ran a very strong 17 minute 44.45 second win. Second went to Dianne Deoliveira of Brick, with Amber Hart, Belmar taking third.  Hart had finished first in 3 of the previous 5 runs when the event was called the Sgt. Pat King 5K.

Runner Carl Turner from Long Branch said the wind was definitely a factor. As he negotiated the turnaround at Bath Avenue he felt as if he had run into a wall as wind pushed him back, even off line. Others said they had the similar experiences.

Also on the day’s fundraiser was a 2-mile family walk on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. A festive party was held at the Celtic Cottage after the races.
